Periodontics Procedures
At Powell Oral Surgery and Periodontics we provide a variety of gum treatment procedures for periodontal disease. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary.
Many times, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy. Even in severe cases, non-surgical periodontal therapy often precedes surgical therapy. This is done to improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and also to help limit the areas requiring surgery.
Non-Invasive/Minimally Invasive Procedures in Periodontics in Columbus Ohio
Both of our periodontists Dr. Eslami and Dr. Bhandal are firm believers in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner in treatment of their patient's periodontal health. The American Association of Periodontics endorses this philosophy. At our practice we emphasize the importance of periodontal health maintenance. This is often accomplished through non-surgical periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planning (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth roots to remove bacterial toxins), followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery of antimicrobials as needed on a case-by-case basis. Most patients do not require any further active treatment. Sometimes, when non-surgical therapy cannot restore periodontal health, surgery may be indicated to restore periodontal anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases. Ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health is recommended in either case and to facilitate oral hygiene practices.
Bone Grafting Procedure
Today, we have the ability to grow bone where needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance of the teeth and surrounding gum tissue.
Bone grafting is often used in dentistry to fill in defects in the jaw bones. Dental Bone grafting can be a simple procedure and may not necessarily involve taking days off your regular activities. We can use "bone in a bottle" procedure to do bone grafting for dental implants. The bone is prepared from other sources and used to get the patients' own bone to grow into the site. It is very effective and very safe. Sometimes synthetic materials can be used to stimulate bone formation and sometimes we even use factors from your own blood to accelerate and promote bone formation in graft areas.
Major bone grafts are typically performed to repair defects of the jaws in prepration of placement of multiple dental implants or prosthetics. These defects may arise as a result of traumatic injuries, tumor surgery, or congenital imperfections. Large defects are repaired using the patient's own bone. These procedures are routinely performed in an operating room or surgery centers and may require a short hospital stay. These major bone harvesting and grafting procedures if needed are performed by our board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Bolourian.
Periodontal Plastic/Cosmetic Procedures
These procedures are specially designed to cover unsightly, sensitive or exposed root surfaces and to prevent future gum recession. There are proven methods available if you are unhappy with the appearance of short unsightly teeth . Periodontal plastic surgery procedures are performed by Dr. Eslami and Dr. Bhandal.
